Moving from Chicago to Los Angeles area.?

I plan to move to Los Angeles area in a year or two. I anticipate finding a job before going and salary will be in the above $5,500 per month range (this is the salary I make now). Realistically, can I live comfortably on that amount in southern California? And if so, where? Please help.
