I am in the army and need to get organized?

Microsoft Works should have some pre-made spreadsheets. If you look in the Template section there should be a budget option or something similar to it. You can do it manually like your wanting to do and its pretty simple but it would take more typing then what is probably allowed. I can try to create a simple Works streadsheet for you if you like.
